The ministry of religious affairs (MoRA) served legal notices on Hajj agents allegedly involved in misuse of Umrah Hajj visas issued by Saudi Arabia.
The notices were served in line with a decision taken by Religious Affairs Minister Prof Motiur Rahman recently at a meeting with the ministry officials.
The MoRA sent the legal notices under a special arrangement on Saturday last to the Hajj agents concerned, a high official of the ministry told the FE on Sunday.
The show-cause notices signed by an assistant secretary of the ministry on June 11 last asked the Hajj agents to reply within 15 working days as to why their licences should not be cancelled or legal action be taken against them.
The decision came as the Saudi government imposed restriction on Umrah Hajj visas following allegations that nearly 10,000 people did not return home after performing Umrah that tarnished Bangladesh's image there.
The MoRA minister said on June 8 they would take action against the errant Hajj agents. He said the government sent a letter to the Saudi government with a request to restart issuance of Umrah Hajj visas during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
