Harvesting of paddy begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 09 (BSS): The harvesting of short duration aman paddy, BRRI Dhan-33 has been started in Sadar Upazila in the district Sunday amid much enthusiasm among the farmers.
A function was also arranged at Khamar Pirgachha village of Sahapara union of Sadar Upazila on the occasion. Sadar Upazila agriculture officer M Mozaffar Rahman attended the function as the chief guest and regional coordinator of IC LEAF Project, Bogra M Hamidur Rahman was present as the special guest.
With chairman of the union M Mahbubur Rahman Tulu, in the chair, it was addressed, among others, by scientific officer of BRRI, Rangpur station M Anarul Haque, executive director of Udyog M Zillur Rahman Khondokar and district correspondent of BSS Sircar Shahiduzzaman.
The speakers called for launching a social movement for eradicating monga from the northern districts by cultivating the BRRI-33 paddy as the paddy could be harvested within 100 days from sowing of seeds with drum seeder and about 45 to 60 days ahead of the normal harvesting period of transplanted aman paddy.
Udyog, a local NGO, BRRI, Rangpur Station and Sahapara Union Parishad jointly motivated the farmers to cultivate BRRI-33 paddy at the village in cooperation with IC LEAF Project.
Primarily, 5.50 acres of land was brought under BRRI-33 paddy cultivation in the village during the current season.
