HC asks ACC to investigate graft charges in six months

NHD Project

FE REPORT | May 21, 2024 00:00:00

The High Court on Monday asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to dispose of within six months a directive that sought proper investigation into alleged irregularity, corruption and bribery during the work of 'National Household and Database (NHD) Project'.

It also asked the ACC to accept the representation as an FIR (First Information Report) if any corruption and irregularities are found during the investigation.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ebadoth Hossain passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer and 73 former officials of the project.

The High Court bench also issued a rule upon the bodies concerned of the government to explain as to why they should not be directed to dispose of the representation that sought proper investigation into alleged irregularity, corruption and bribery during the work of the NHD project.

Chairman of the ACC, Cabinet secretary, Dr Shahnaz Arefin, secretary of the Statistics and Informatics Division and others have been asked to comply with the rule.

Md Abu Jafor Shaikh Manik, also one of the petitioners, appeared in the court hearing in support of the petition while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.

Earlier on May 7 this year, lawyer Manik on behalf of the former employees sent a representation to the ACC seeking an immediate thorough investigation into the alleged irregularity, corruption and bribery during the work of the NHD Project.
