HC disposes of 28,506 old cases in seven days

The High Court, as part of a special drive launched following the directive of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, has disposed of 28,506 old cases in seven working days since May 7, reports BSS.
"Following the directive of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, a special drive was launched on May 7 to prioritise the disposal of long-pending old criminal miscellaneous and writ petitions on a designated day on every week," Supreme Court public relations officer Md Shafiqul Islam told the news agency.
He said the special initiative, undertaken to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce the case backlog and enhance the efficiency of the judiciary, has resulted in the disposal of a significant number of old cases.
On July 9 last, 1,946 old cases were disposed of by the High Court. The criminal motion benches of the High Court Division disposed of 1,786 old criminal miscellaneous cases, while the writ motion benches disposed of 160 old writ cases, the apex court spokesperson said.
'Since the special drive to dispose of old cases began, the High Court has disposed of 21,622 old criminal miscellaneous cases and 6,884 old writ petitions over seven working days, bringing the number of old cases disposed of so far to 28,506,' Shafiqul added.
Commenting on the disposal of a large number of old cases, Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal told the news agency earlier that the initiative taken by the Chief Justice to dispose of old cases at the High Court was commendable and expressed hope that the process would continue.
