HC prohibits publication of photo, name of any child accused

March 14, 2009 00:00:00

The High Court has strictly prohibited forthwith publication of any photograph or name and identity of a child accused or offender in any print and electronic media, reports UNB.

Reminding all concerned, including the government, of the imperative for complying with Section 17 of the Children Act 1974, the High Court said any such publication would be an offence under this law.

According to the Act, anyone who breaks it will have to suffer imprisonment for two months or a fine of Tk 200.

The High Court order came while delivering a judgment on a public-interest litigation (PIL) in a child-related case meant for enforcement of the Children Act 1974 and its Rules 1976.
