HC stays NSU trustee board reconstitution

FE REPORT | August 22, 2024 00:00:00

The High Court (HC) stayed a government decision, reconstituting the trustee board of North South University (NSU) in 2022. The court also issued a rule, asking the authorities to explain as to why the decision should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar passed the order on Tuesday after hearing two writ petitions, filed by six former members of the trustee board.

They challenged legality of the decision to reconstitute the NSU board after being dropped during the reconstitution. The petitioners were Aziz Al Qaiser, Azim Uddin Ahmed, Benajir Ahmed, M A Kashem, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shahjahan.

Kazi Akhtar Hosain, one of the lawyers of the petitioners, told the FE that the HC order revived the previous trustee board that included their clients as founders and life members.

The Sheikh Hasina-led government reconstituted the NSU trustee board in August 2022, after a probe of the University Grants Commission (UGC) had found "involvement of some of its members in anti-state activities, sponsorship of militancy, corruption, and arbitrariness".
