The High Court on Monday summarily rejected a writ petition filed by Zulias Cizar Talukdar, a vice-president (VP) aspirant in the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, seeking reinstatement of his candidacy and ballot number.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order after hearing the petition.
Lawyer Sardar Abul Hossain appeared in the court proceedings on behalf of the writ petitioner, while lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir represented Dhaka University.
Talukdar's name appeared in the final candidate list published by the DUCSU election commission on August 26, where he was allotted ballot number 26 as a VP candidate.
However, following a complaint lodged by Salimullah Muslim Hall house tutor and assistant returning officer, alleging his involvement with the banned Chhatra League, the election commission later dropped his candidacy based on recommendations from the election appeal tribunal.
Talukdar claimed he was denied the opportunity to defend himself against the allegations.
On August 27, he served a legal notice to the chief returning officer, which allegedly went unanswered, prompting him to move the High Court. Talukder filed the writ petition, demanding reinstatement of his candidacy and ballot number.
