Prices of hilsa and other varieties of fish have shown a slight decline while vegetables and eggs have become costlier in the last one week.
Price of hilsa of above 900 grams remained static at the previous high of Tk 1,800-2,200 a kg, but a medium and small-sized one was retailed at Tk 600-1,500 a kg based on quality.
Price of a small and medium-sized hilsa has witnessed a decline of Tk 200 per kg but was still much higher compared to the purchasing capacity of the commoners, said consumer rights.
The decline in hilsa prices has helped prices of other fish varieties to come down to some extent.
Prices of other riverine fish varieties showed Tk 50-100 a kg plunge as ruhi and katla were traded at Tk 600-1,050 per kg.
Shoul, riverine tengra, pabda, medium-sized golda and riger shrimp were sold at Tk 700-950 per kg, while harina shrimp was available at Tk 1,000-1,150 a kg on Friday.
Cultured ruhi and katla were retailed at Tk 300-450 a kg marking Tk 50 a kg plunge.
Ramzan Ali, a trader at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said supply of hilsa increased thanks to a rise in catch both in the sea and rivers. The price might decline further in coming weeks.
Meanwhile, vegetable prices increased by Tk 5.0-10 a kg further in a week which traders attributed to heavy rain and flood in 12 districts.
The flood in Cumilla has directly affected Dhaka market as a big chunk of supply comes from the district, said Neyamat Hossain, a vegetable vendor at Karwan Bazar.
He said prices of brinjal, long-yard bean, sponge gourd, teasel gourd, ridge gourd and green chilli have increased by Tk 4.0-5.0 a kg at the wholesale level in the northern and north-western districts amid the rising demand.
However, brinjal was retailed at Tk 80-100, teasel gourd and eddo at Tk 80-90, sponge gourd at Tk 70-80, pointed gourd at Tk 60-70 a kg, long-yard bean at Tk 90-110 a kg, and green chilli at Tk 280-320 a kg on Friday.
Meanwhile, egg price also showed Tk 10 hike per dozen in a week.
Farm brown eggs were retailed at Tk 155-165 each dozen and white eggs at Tk 150-160 a dozen on the day.
Broiler egg price also showed Tk 10 hike a kg, as the item was retailed at Tk 180-190 a kg.
