IEH renovates pathology dept, microbiology, virology services

The renovated pathology department and microbiology and virology services of the Islamia Eye Hospital (IEH) and the MA Ispahani Institute of Ophthalmology were inaugurated Thursday.
The renovations were done in collaboration with the High Commission of Pakistan and the ORBIS International, which is saving sight worldwide.
With Mirza Ali Behrouze Ispahani, chairman of the IEH Society, in the chair, the inauguration ceremony at the IEH auditorium in the city was also attended by Alamgir Babar, Pakistan high commissioner to Bangladesh, Abu Raihan, Bangladesh country director of ORBIS International.
Besides, IEH adviser Zahida Ispahani, chief pathologist T Ali, senior consultant MA Salam Talukder and administrative director Tajuddin were also present. Mahjabeen Choudhury, doctor of the hospital, conducted the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Alamgir Babar said Bangladesh and Pakistan have very good relations.
Mentioning the importance of the health sector for socioeconomic development, Alamgir said Pakistan government has been implementing a programme for development of the health sector in Bangladesh for the last two years.
Under the programme, he said they are giving equipment and technological support and providing scholarship to the students for pursuing study in Pakistan.
"Next year, we will provide scholarship to six Bangladeshi medical students," Alamgir informed the audience.
Abu Raihan, Bangladesh country director of ORBIS, said the IEH will achieve the high standard of eye treatment with the renovation.
He stressed the need for cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh for developing further expertise in this regard.
Raihan, however, expressed his organisation's commitment to extend support to the hospital in future also.
Earlier, Mirza Ali Behrouze Ispahani, chairman of the IEH society, in his welcome speech, said the renovation with the latest technology will make the hospital a one-stop eye care centre.
He, however, expressed his thanks to the donors for their support for renovation of the hospital.
Highlighting benefits of the renovation, T Ali, chief pathologist of the IEH, said the developed microbiology and virology services will help ensure complete diagnosis and appropriate treatment for a greater number of patients.
The hospital was established in 1968. Each year the hospital conducts about 200 cornea transfer operations, besides treating some 500-550 patients every day.
Monica Begum, who got back her eyesight after cornea operation and was employed at the hospital as part of the rehabilitation programme, urged the richest of the society to come forward to help patients like her.
When asked, Zahida Ispahani, adviser of the hospital, said they have a plan to rehabilitate more such patients in future.
