IIMC Bangladesh chapter launched

Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Alumni Association Bangladesh on Saturday organised its first ever get-together in the capital with a view to strengthen cross-cultural relations between Bangladesh and India.

The IIMC Bangladesh chapter was also formally launched at the programme titled 'Connections-2019' held at the National Press Club in the city.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury addressed the programme as the chief guest while Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das attended as the special guest.

Cultural Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Ashim Kumar Ukil, Central IIMC Alumni Association president Prasad Sanyal, IIMC Alumni Association Bangladesh president Ihsanul Karim Helal, and its general secretary Zahid Newaz Khan also spoke.

Delivering his speech, the state minister said the relations between Bangladesh and India is historic and it is getting deeper paving the way of sharing scope between the two nations.

He said Bangladesh has successfully settled land boundary dispute with India while discussion is going on to settle water sharing issue with the friendly neighbour.

Referring to recently increased trade with India through river route, Mr Chowdhury said, "The Prime Minister of Bhutan is currently in Bangladesh and he expressed his interest to start trade with us via river route."

In that case, Bhutan will need assistance from India to use Bangladesh's Mongla and Chittagong port, he added.

About IIMC Alumni, he said Alumni are contributing in the field of media in Bangladesh and it is expected that they will play vital role creating more connections with India.

Indian High Commissioner Riva Ganguly said that the role of media in shaping the opinion and psyche of a country cannot be underestimated.

Media of the two countries, both print and electronic, is quite strong and there should be more engagement between them, she added.

Referring to the IIMC Alumni in Dhaka, she said, "It's a matter of great pride for us that IIMC Alumni includes many distinguished journalists, government officials, eminent figures who had enormous success in their career which proves very high standard and calibre of the Indian institute".

IIMC Bangladesh chapter president Ihsanul Karim said that this is the formal launching of IIMC Bangladesh chapter Alumni that formed ten months ago.

He also expressed the hope that it will help create new avenue of relationship between the two friendly nations.
