Many roads of the capital city were submerged by rainwater on Saturday, causing immense sufferings to its dwellers.
The traffic congestion took a turn for the worse as clogged roads in many places slowed down the movement of vehicles.
Roads in different areas such as Shantinagar, Jatrabari, Shahjahanpur, Khilgaon, Demra, Badda, Green Road, Senpara Parbata at Mirpur, Adabar and Mohammadpur were submerged by heavy rainfall that continued till filing of this report.
Many link roads in those areas went under two to three feet rainwater. Saturated dust and overflow of water from the drains also caused sufferings on city commuters.
Md Ataur Rahman, an employee of a private firm, said it took him two and a half hours to reach Motijheel from Adabar which usually takes maximum one hour.
Md Shohrab Ali, a resident of Senpara Parbata, told the FE that he had to walk through waist-deep water to go to Kazipara Bazar to buy kitchen items.
"My wife and children are facing trouble to go to their school at Mirpur-6," he said.
According to Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA), the existing drainage system of the city can pump 20mm rainfall at a time while the drainage system might saturate with more than 40mm rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) data showed that the city witnessed 74mm rainfall between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm on Saturday.
The Met Office forecast that after crossing the coastal belt, the cyclonic storm 'Komen' weakened in the Faridpur and Dhaka regions, causing heavy rainfall.
