Incessant rainfall disrupts Ctg life, port activities

CHITTAGONG, June 20 (BSS): Moderate to heavy shower for 24 hours in the city and most parts of the district disrupted civic life causing water-logging in most of the areas.

Loading and unloading activities in Chittagong port remained suspended due to inclement weather.

Assistant Traffic Inspector of Chittagong Port Mahabubul Alam said suspension of loading and unloading activities came following hoisting of no. 3 signal and incessant rainfall.

Fourteen ships anchored at the outer anchorage could not unload goods due to rough weather, he added.

Meanwhile, fresh downpour increased sufferings to the city dwellers who experienced water-logging in almost entire city for last 24 hours.

Met office sources said downpour began at about 7 p.m on Thursday  creating serious dislocation in normal public life besides hampering business activities.

Met sources said they have measured 321.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 3 pm today.

Met office forecast further moderate to heavy shower in next 24 hours in Chittagong and some other parts of the country.  Maritime port in Chittagong has been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 3 until further notification.

Low-lying areas in the city went under knee- deep water due to rainfall submerging dwelling houses and business establishments.

The low-lying parts that have gone under knee-deep water included - Bakolia, Bahaddarhat, Kapasgola, Halishahar, and CDA residential area.

Motor vehicles were hardly seen in those areas, rickshaws were seen plying in small number.

Commuters had to suffer crossing filthy and clogged water, to reach their destinations. Local kitchen markets and grocery shops remained closed.
