Speakers at a programme said on Saturday inclusion of right to information (RTI) in textbooks of ninth and tenth grades aiming to apprise the mass people of the RTI Act would create greater awareness.
They also noted that six years after enactment of the RTI Act awareness among the people about the law had not been created up to the expected level.
Their observations came at the opening ceremony of an orientation programme on RTI Act organised at the office of Deputy Commissioner, Jessore for teachers of secondary schools of six upazilas in the district.
Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI) in partnership with Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) organised the programme in cooperation with the office of the DC and the district education office of Jessore.
MRDI is to organise orientation programmes at Jessore Sadar, Bagharpara, Monirampur, Keshabpur, Chowgachha and Jhikargachha upazilas of the district under the initiative.
A total of 126 teachers of 126 schools-86 from Jessore Sadar and 40 from Bagharpara-took part in the inaugural session.
In his speech Deputy Commissioner of Jessore Humayun Kabir said the government enacted the RTI Act in compliance with its commitment to build a people-oriented administration. But even in six years of enactment of the law, awareness on it had not been created at the desired level.
"Once the teachers are properly acquainted with the law, they will present it before the students which will produce multi-dimensional results in future," he added.
MRDI Executive Director Hasibur Rahman said the government incorporated RTI in textbooks in response to the demand of the civil society. Teachers were not aware about the details of the law.
Use of RTI Act, articles and clauses of the act and the role of teachers in this regard were discussed in the programme.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Parvez Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Jessore Sadar Kamrul Arif, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Kamruzzaman Jahangir Hossain Miah, and MRDI Senior Programme Officer Hamidul Islam Hillol spoke on the occasion.
