CHITTAGONG, July 25: Valiant freedom-fighter Euke Ching Marma  passed away on Friday morning at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

He was 80 years old. He is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons. He was the country's only Bir Bikram-awarded indigenous freedom fighter.

Family sources said Euke Ching Bir Bikram of Bandarban hill district had been suffering from old-age complications for a long time.

He was admitted to Bandarban General Hospital and then shifted to CMCH, as his health condition deteriorated further Thursday.

His daughter Renu Marma said her father joined EPR (East Pakistan Rifles) in 1952. In March 1971 he was posted in Rangpur as a Nayek. He took part in the War of Liberation with nine of his colleagues.

He will be cremated tomorrow (Sunday) with state honours.
