Innovate newer techs for rapid dev, President tells JUST convocation

JESSORE, Feb 7 (UNB): Describing technology as a means of unleashing development, President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday underscored the need for innovating newer technologies for the country's rapid progress.
"Technology is the means of development. So, we'll have to take initiatives to invent newer technologies for the country's faster development," he said while addressing the 3rd convocation of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST).
The President said innovation is not enough but the most important thing is to apply the innovation properly. "Use technology to accelerate development. But we must be aware that technology cannot use people."
Describing various successes achieved in the fields of per capita income, national growth, women empowerment, sanitation, agriculture, education, health, Padma Bridge and Bangabandhu Satellite, he said, "To take forward these achievements further there's no alternative to achieving standards in quality science education and IT sector."
Noting that the university is not only a centre of learning but the footrest of higher study and research, Abdul Hamid said the education from the university is very significant to build the young generation worthy and global citizens.
Mentioning that creative activities are one of the most learned disciplines of education along with study, he said various menaces, including extremism, have obstructed the free-thinking environment at the universities in the absence of this.
"We've to come out of this. To prepare the next generation as the builder of modern Bangladesh and capable leadership at all levels, they'll have to remain aware about human values," he said.
The President called upon the university teachers and students, researchers and guardians to contribute collectively to nurturing mutual respect, tolerance and non-communal spirit.
He also urged the new graduates to always uphold the truth and righteousness as a graduate of highest degree from the country's highest academy.
Terming the new graduates as the country's higher human resources, Hamid said, "The future of the country depends on you. Your youth, knowledge, talent and wisdom will be the main driving force for the country's development. You have debt with the country and the people. You should pay the debt as a conscientious citizen," he added.
Among others, convocation speaker Nobel Laureate Professor Robert Huber, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan and JUST Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain addressed the convocation programme.
