Institute on hotel management opens

The Royal Park Residence, an international boutique hotel in Dhaka, opened an institute on hotel management, tourism and catering.
While talking to the FE, Harikesha Wijesekera, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal Park Residence said the main objective of introducing such an institute in the country is to train up local youths to cater to the needs of hospitality industry.
"There is a large demand for such professionals both at home and abroad, especially in the Middle-East countries, and we want to create such professionals to cope with the needs," said Harikesha.
The institute has been equipped with modern laboratories, foreign resources and international standard curriculum to cope with needs of the environment of international hotels.
The CEO of the Sri Lanka-based hotel also said practical classes of the institute are being taken at the Royal Park Residence.
He also said the Bangladeshi people can get better salaries and other fringe benefits both at home and abroad by being trained from the institute as the certificates offered by the institute are internationally recognised.
Currently, only state-owned Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) is conducting courses on hotel management and tourism and their duration is six weeks.
Institute insiders said that so far, it had conducted four batches over the past more than one year and the duration of each course is four months.
Around 120 students passed out from the institute and they have mostly been absorbed by different hotels in the United Kingdom, Middle-East countries and local international hotels, insiders claimed.
Saman Devasurendra, senior lecturer of the institute, said there are four courses like professional cookery, food and beverage operation, hotel housekeeping and front office operations.
He said the trainees are also taught two international languages, besides basic course requirements.
