The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed Thursday in the country as elsewhere across the globe aimed at launching a united social movement for an end to the menace, reports BSS.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, this day serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by the Member States of creating an international society to be free from drug abuse.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion wishing a grand success of the Day.
Each year on June 26, the Day is observed to create awareness among the people about the adverse impact of the drug abuse. The theme of this year is "Drug use disorders are preventable and treatable."
The Day's programme began with holding a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city Thursday followed by an-anti drug procession and discussions.
State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan was present as the chief guest while Tipu Munshi, chairman of parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs was the special guest.
