Int'l conference on solid waste begins

KHULNA, Nov 9(BSS): Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleq said, solid waste might be an asset of Bangladesh.
He emphasised on the need for improving the management of solid waste particularly how to recycle the waste and utilising it to fertilise the soil.
The Mayor said these while inaugurating a two-day 'International Conference on Solid Waste Management' at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) auditorium Monday.
KUET Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Nowsher Ali Morol was in the chair while Vice-chancellor of BUET Professor Dr AMM Safiullah took part as the special guest.
The conference has been organised jointly by the Department of Civil Engineering of KUET in cooperation with KCC, Bauhaus University Weimer of Germany, Asian Institute of Technology of Thailand, Bauhaus International Research and Education Centre of Germany and Lubian University of Technology of Poland.
Co-financed by European Commission, the conference aims to exchange views and experiences at international level and to understand solid waste management concept as a whole.
Professor M Alamgir, Chairman of the organising Committee of Waste Safe 2009 made the address of welcome speech while Professor R Cossu, Chairman of IWWG, Professor W Bidingmaier of ORBIT and Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director of Department of Environment also spoke.
Secretary of the organising committee Professor Dr Q Sazzad Hossain, Professor Dr Amin U Mridah, Vice-chancellor of Pabna University of Science and Technology and Professor Dr Eckhard Kraft of Bauhaus University Weima of Germany were in the chair at keynote Session 1 and 2 respectively.
Later, two parallel technical sessions were joined by a total of 160 participants from home and abroad including 54 foreign participants from 13 countries.
