May 29, 2013 00:00:00

The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers will be observed today (Wednesday) in the country as elsewhere in the globe. The government has chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner, reports BSS. This year, the theme for the Day is "UN Peacekeeping: Adapting to New Challenges". President M Abdul Hamid Advocate and Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina in separate messages praised the Bangladeshi peacekeepers for their outstanding contribution to enhancing goodwill of the country. Newspapers will publish articles, while television channels air special programmes, highlighting the significance of the day. The days programme will start with the 'peacekeepers' run' while a reception will be given to the near and dear ones of the Bangladeshi peace keepers killed and injured in the peacekeeping missions at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city today (Wednesday). Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the reception ceremony as the chief guest. Meanwhile, PM Sheikh Hasina Tuesday gave assurances of her government's continued support to the UN for protection and promotion of world peace. In a message on the eve of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, she said Bangladeshi peacekeepers enhanced the country's image in international arena through their brilliant performance and hard work. "It is also a matter of great pride that Bangladesh is currently the largest peacekeepers contributing nation in UN peacekeeping missions," she added.
