International Literacy Day will be observed in the country today (Saturday) as elsewhere around the globe, reports UNB.
This day (September 8) is being observed as the International Literacy Day every year as per the declaration of the United Nations.
Elaborate programmes have been chalked out to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed will be the chief guest at a function arranged by the Primary and Mass Education Ministry at Osmani Smriti Memorial Hall.
This year's theme of the Day has been chosen as 'Literacy: Key to Health and Well-being'.
The main objective of observing the day is to make society aware about the serious consequences of illiteracy and the importance of universal education.
President Iajuddin Ahmed and CA Fakhruddin Ahmed have issued separate messages on the occasion.
In his message, President Iajuddin said role of non-formal education is boundless along with formal education for ensuring overall human development and improvement of standard of living in developing countries.
"United efforts of various government and non-government organisations are essential in this connection," he said.
The President expressed his hope that meaningful participation of all concerned would spread the light of education at all tiers of the society, thereby turning Bangladesh into an illiteracy-free country by 2015.
In another message, the CA said: "We are obliged constitutionally and pledge-bound in international arena for ensuring education for all."
He urged all concerned, including teachers, guardians and private organisations, to work together with devotion for supplementing the government initiative to ensure quality education for all and attaining total literacy.
Bangladesh Betar and BTV will air programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
Non-formal Education Bureau will hold a seminar on 'Non-formal Education Policy-Implementation Strategy' at the LGED Auditorium Sunday. Concerned government and non-government representatives are likely to participate in the seminar.
Besides, various mass awareness programmes have been taken up to observe the day at divisional, district and upazila headquarters.
Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO and various non-government organisations have also taken up programmes for the day.
