Int'l training on CGE modeling starts in Delhi

FE REPORT | March 19, 2025 00:00:00

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), launched a week-long introductory training programme on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modeling in Delhi on Monday (March 17).

Supported by CGIAR, the programme aims to equip participants with hands-on experience using IFPRI's Standard CGE Model, enabling them to address critical policy questions in diverse economic contexts, said a IFPRI press release.

The training also marked the launch of two policy briefs from the 2024 edition, showcasing the impact of CGE modeling in evidence-based policymaking.

CGE modeling serves as a vital tool for policymakers and researchers to analyse the impacts of structural changes, policy reforms, and economic shocks.

By simulating real-world scenarios, CGE models facilitate data-driven decision-making, whether evaluating trade liberalisation, tax reforms, or climate adaptation strategies.

Dr Alka Singh of ICAR-IARI emphasised the importance of capacity-building initiatives like this training, which fosters cross-learning among participants.

Dr Shahidur Rashid of IFPRI focused on the role of policy modeling in addressing South Asia's emerging challenges, while Dr Selim Raihan of SANEM outlined the programme's focus on both theoretical foundations and practical applications.

Dr R C Agrawal of ICAR stressed the need for advanced computing tools and AI-driven innovations in agriculture, while Dr P K Joshi of AERA underscored the importance of continuous skill development.
