Int'l Women's Day observed

March 09, 2008 00:00:00

The country marked International Women's Day Saturday, which was being observed across the world with the theme of 'investing in women and girls', reports bdnews24.com.
The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) and the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) jointly organised a concert in the city on the day to mark the day.
The concert to carry the slogan - 'Wake Up People, Wake Up to the Rights of Women' - aims both at establishing women's rights and inspiring people against corruption linking the movements against corruption with women's rights.
On March 8, 1857 women workers in the US garments industry staged protests demanding shorter working hours, pay raises and better working conditions.
They were successful in lowering their working hours from 12 hours to eight hours.
In 1910, German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed observing the day as International Women's Day, which the world has been doing ever since.
