Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu urged Tuesday the mass media to play a responsible role for the sake of the country and people, reports BSS.

"Media will criticise and publish mistakes of the government but false and instigating news will hamper democracy," he said after inaugurating the long waited media centre at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

He said the present government led by Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina is committed to expanding media and its activities for publishing news based on facts and figure.

Inu also urged the journalists as well as media personalities to avoid publishing such false and instigating news, adding, "The present government has been giving importance to media."

Terming militancy, terrorism and communalism as the enemy of democracy, he said the media will have to play a responsible role for the democracy.

Inu gave assurance to provide all sorts of facilities in the media centre like television, cable less internet 'Wi-Fi', furniture and other instruments.

Information secretary Mortuza Ahmed said the information minister took an initiative to provide a media centre for journalists after getting a proposal.

The inaugural ceremony was addressed, among others, by Principal Information Officer (PIO) Tasir Ahmed, newly formed Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum president Shyamol Sarkar, general secretary M Siddiqur Rahman, senior reporter of the Baishakhi Television Shahnaz Yeasmin.

Earlier, the minister formally inaugurated the media centre by cutting ribbon.
