FE REPORT

Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed on Sunday that involvement of Jagannath University (JnU) student Raihan Siddique Amman and Assistant Proctor Deen Islam in instigating the suicide of the university's Law Department student Fairuz Sadaf Abontika has been primarily proved.

Kh Mahid Uddin, additional commissioner (crime and operations) of DMP, made the claim at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre after initial interrogation of the two accused.

"However, it cannot be conclusively said that all allegations align with current evidence. But the allegations were found to be primarily true. Further investigation will unveil the depth of their involvement," he added.

Taslima Begum, mother of Abontika, lodged a case with Kotwali Police Station in Cumilla. Amman and Deen Islam were arrested from Dhaka on Saturday night following the case filed over the death of Abontika. Later they were handed over to Kotwali thana.

Fairuz Sadaf Abontika's body was found hanging in her Cumilla home on Friday night.

Before Abontika's death, there was a post on her Facebook accusing Amman of sexual harassment and alleging that Deen Islam verbally abused her and took Amman's side when she complained.

Earlier on Friday, the university suspended Deen Islam amid protests by students on the campus and in Cumilla town.JnU authorities on Friday night suspended Amman and formed a five-member probe committee headed by the president of the teachers' association.

Following the news of the death, hundreds of university students took to the campus and staged protests till midnight Friday, demanding justice.

The protesters put forth six demands--- a fair and just trial over Abontika's death; immediate arrest and punishment of the two accused; their expulsion; ending the culture of victim-blaming and ensuring the safety of Abontika's family; the university administration filing a case as the plaintiff; and strengthening the university's anti-harassment cell.
