Is DU prepared to restart academic activities following movement?

FE REPORT | August 19, 2024 00:00:00

Classes, exams and academic activities did not take place at the Dhaka University on Sunday, the day on which the institution has been officially announced to reopen.

There was an absence of clear instruction from the university authorities on restarting the academic academics, though the administration says they are ready if the students return to class.

Students, who are currently living in different halls, said to FE that they have no problem in returning to classes or participating in class examinations.

"We will return to the university as soon as we receive instructions to start classes," they said.

However, some students say that if politics by the students and teachers are banned, then they will return to class.

"Action must also be taken against the teachers who were against the the 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and participating students."

Some teachers said all academic activities will restart after the appointment of the new vice-chancellor. However, authorities could not provide any specific information about the required time for the appoint of a new vice-chancellor.

This correspondent visited the Dhaka University premises and its halls. There wasn't any damages to the university's administrative offices, but some rooms mainly furnished with luxary items used by the Chhatra League, such as AC, sofa have seen damaged.

However, students repaired the doors and windows of some rooms with their own initiative. Many students have been staying in the rooms and there are also some visitors.

On Thursday, the Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education issued an order directing the opening of all educational institutions, including universities, from Sunday.

On August 6, the university administration decided to open the university and all halls in an emergency Syndicate Meeting online. The meeting decided to open the DU, hosting valid students in the halls and to continue the regular maintenance of the halls. The authorities also decided to start the university's academic activities including examinations.

The university authorities have given new instructions regarding the accommodation of students in residential halls and hostels. According to the instructions published on the DU website students will be shifted to residential halls and hostels in stages.

Students, who completed Master's final examination or have passed graduation but not admitted for a post graduation with a regular batch are not allowed to get hostel.

If the belongings of these students are left in halls or hostels, then all the dues of the halls or hostels should be paid by the due date announced by the university or the authorities will remove the belongings from their rooms, according to the instructions.

The concerned authorities will not take responsibility for these things.

Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, President of the Dhaka University Teachers' Association said, “After the appointment of the new vice-chancellor, we will start the education program under his leadership.”
