Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmood Khandkar said Monday the issues relating to militancy and terrorism would be dealt with an iron hand, reports BSS.

"This is the high time to enhance the strength of the law enforcing agencies to deal with the issues like militancy and terrorism," the IGP commented while inaugurating a four-day workshop on "Responding to Terrorism Alternative Approach" jointly organised by Police Staff College and International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR), Singapore at Bangladesh Police Staff College in the city Monday.

The function was chaired by Rector of the Police Staff College Additional Inspector General of Police Md Nazmul Haq and Manager of Singapore-based ICPVTR Joline Jerat was present at it as the special guest.

Some 21 senior officials from police, military and intelligence offices at home and abroad are taking part in the workshop.

The IGP said there is no alternative to imparting training to members of the law enforcing agencies and intelligence officials to curb terrorism and militancy.

The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared war against terrorism and militancy after assuming power and this war would continue to the complete elimination of terrorism and militancy, he said.

The militants and terrorists are totally controlled during the tenure of the present government and they would not be able to raise their heads in future, the IGP also said.

"Our law and order forces have been contributing to containing regional terrorism with the help and cooperation from the neighbours," Mr Khandkar said, adding that such type of training is a must to continue such efforts.

The participants of the workshop would be able to share their theoretical and practical experiences and knowledge on regional, national and international aspects to curb terrorism and militancy, the IGP added.
