Job centre for disabled to be set up in city

A job centre will be set up in the city aiming to create jobs for people with disabilities and bring them into the mainstream of development, especially ready-made garment industry.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH will jointly establish the centre at the CRP office.

To this effect, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the three organisations Monday.

BGMEA vice president Reaz Bin Mahmood, CRP executive director Shafiqul Islam and GIZ programme coordinator of PSES Joechen Weikert signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.

The centre will provide training to disabled people including those who got paralysed in various garment factory accidents to turn them into skilled ones and arrange jobs for them.

Meanwhile, a project on 'Inclusive Business Pilots in the Garment Sector' under the Netherlands Development Organisation was launched on Tuesday. The project will provide health facilities to pregnant apparel workers.

Meher Afroz Chumki, state minister for women and children affairs, formally inaugurated the project at the city's Lake Shore Hotel.
