Journalist Akhtar Ahmed Khan dies

Bangladesh's Press Minister in Washington Journalist Akhtar Ahmed Khan (54) died at his residence in Washington, USA, a message received in the city said Tuesday, reports BSS.
A senior official of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said Khan was found dead at his house as the police broke into his residence late night Monday.
He said Khan, who was living alone at his house for the past several days, did not turn up in office Monday when his colleagues at Bangladesh embassy went to his house failing to contact him over phone.
The PMO official quoting the Bangladesh envoy in Washington said the embassy officials called the police as they found the front door of his house locked from inside.
Foreign ministry officials in the city said they were trying to get the details about the death.
UNB adds: Khan, also former secretary general of Bangladesh Federal Journalists’ Union, left behind his wife, a daughter and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Akhter Ahmed Khan.
In a condolence message, the President said Akhter Ahmed Khan played an active role in establishing freedom of the press as well as democracy in the country.
