The eleventh death anniversary of eminent journalist and writer Santosh Gupta will be observed today (Thursday), said a press release.
He died on this day in 2004 due to brain hemorrhage at the age of 80.
To mark the day, Santosh Gupta Smriti Parishad will place wreath at his memorial at the Postagola crematorium at 10:00 am.
Santosh Gupta, born in 1925 at Runshi village in Jhalakathi was involved with left politics before starting journalism as a profession and was jailed for about 12 years for his political convictions. He started his career as a journalist in 1957.
An icon of self-sacrifice, honesty and patriotism, Santosh Gupta made significant contributions to all democratic movements including the War of Liberation in 1971.
He joined journalism in 1957 with the Daily Azad and later switched over to Daily Sangbad where he was the senior assistant editor. He worked with the Sangbad for about 35 years.
His post editorials written under pen name 'Aniruddha' made him one of the most popular journalists at home and abroad. The major ideology in his writings was objectivity, independence and honesty.
Santosh Gupta was a legend in journalism. His writings have always inspired the democratic and progressive movements in the country. He wrote 18 books on arts, poem, politics, literature and journalism and edited more than 15 books. Still a lot of his writings are un-published. For his outstanding contribution to journalism and literature he was awarded Independence Award (posthumously) which is the highest state award given by the government. Moreover he received many other awards including Ekushey Padak.
