The Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday passed the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Bill-2023 in a bid to extend the tenure of Vice Chancellor, Pro-vice Chancellors and Treasurer to four years from three years, reports BSS.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque moved the bill in the House and it was passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
Piloting the bill, the health minister said the new law was designed to bring the changes in several places of the existing Act of 1998. With the latest amendment, the law has been amended for two times.
"Now the tenure of vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellors and treasurer is three years, which has been extended to four years, keeping similarity to the tenure in other public universities," he said.
Meanwhile, "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Narayanganj Bill, 2023' was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad aiming to develop professional expertise in science and technology education.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni placed the bill in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
