JU employees go on strike

JU CORRESPONDENT | July 18, 2023 00:00:00

Contractual employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday started a sit-in strike on the campus demanding a permanent employment.

They said that they will continue this programme until they receive a written assurance of their permanent employment.

The sit-in strike began at 9 am and it was ongoing while filing this report at 5:30 pm.

It is known that the university employs 142 temporary workers, who receive a daily wage of Tk 400 each.

Shamsul Alam, a temporary employee and security guard of Begum Sufia Kamal Hall, said, "The administration has repeatedly promised to make our job permanent, but it has not been implemented. A few months ago, when we sat on a hunger strike, the administration gave us a verbal assurance of permanent recruitment. Then we suspended the programme."

Shariful Islam, another temporary employee of JU, said, "I have been serving the university for a long time. I can't support my family well with my salary. I am struggling to run my family."

JU Acting Registrar Abu Hasan said, "We had a detailed discussion with them for two and a half hours in this connection on Sunday. All of their claims have been addressed. The administration actually has nothing to do here. We will monitor the situation and inform them later."
