JU punishes 13 teachers, officials over role in July Uprising attacks

Jahangirnagar University (JU) syndicate has decided to take disciplinary actions against 13 teachers and officials for their involvement in attacks on students during the July Uprising. The decisions were taken at a syndicate meeting that continued for nearly 13 hours from Monday afternoon to early Tuesday.

JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, "The decisions were made based on the recommendations of a structure committee."

According to the decisions, Associate Professor Mehdi Iqbal of Dept of Geography was sent into compulsory retirement.

Former Proctor Prof Alamgir Kabir had his salary reduced to the initial scale of his current post and was declared ineligible to hold administrative responsibilities for five years. Prof A A Mamun of Dept of Physics was barred from administra tive duties for the same period.

Associate Prof ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan of Dept of Govt and Politics had his salary reduced to the initial scale, and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

Similarly, Prof Bashir Ahmed had his salary reduced to the initial scale, and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

Prof Tajuddin Sikdar of Dept of Public Health had his salary reduced to the initial scale, and was declared ineligible for administrative duties for five years.

Former Pro-VC Prof Mostafa Feeroz had his salary reduced to Grade-2 and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

Lecturer Kanan Kumar Sen of Dept of Accounting had two annual increments cancelled.

Prof Israfil Ahmed of the Dept of Dramatics had his salary reduced to the initial scale of his current post.

Assistant Prof Mohibur Rouf of the same dept was demoted to the post of lecturer.

Prof Nazmul Hassan Talukder of Dept of Bangla had two annual increments cancelled and was placed in a lower scale. Associate Prof Hosne Ara of Dept of History was issued a warning.

The syndicate exempted several faculty members from the allegations.
