The students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have started a fresh movement against the ward quota in the first year honours admission test.
The students demand a fixed number of wards as the administration admits a good number of students under the ward quota defying the admission policy every year.
The demand came from a human chain formed in front of the New Arts building at around 11:00 am where around three hundred students participated.
The agitating students also submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam for eliminating quota discrimination and not to admit any student who won't pass the upcoming admission test.
Nasirul Islam, an agitating third year student of Journalism and Media Studies department said, "The general students cannot get admitted to the university despite obtaining 60-70 marks whereas every year a good number of students under ward quota are getting admitted to different departments obtaining only 7-11 marks in the admission test."
A teacher of JU, seeking anonymity, said last year they admitted 10 students by giving 6-8 grace marks as the authority put pressure on them to admit the students.
A few days ago the workers of JU also observed several days' work abstention programme and demonstrated on the campus for getting the extra facilities for their children in the admission test.
Following their movement the administration provided extra facilities for them.
Every year around three hundred students get chance of admission to the JU from seven quotas. These are ward quota, VC quota, cultural quota, player quota, autistic quota, freedom fighter quota and special freedom fighter quota.
