Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have suspended 12 students of the Department of History over allegations of ragging first-year students of the same department.
The suspension was announced in an office order signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman on Saturday.
According to the order, a group of students from the department's 54th batch allegedly gathered several freshers at different locations on the campus between 11:00pm on July 3 and 1:00am the following day during a programme marking the reception of newcomers. They allegedly subjected the students to verbal abuse as well as physical and mental harassment.
The office order said the alleged actions violated Section 5(6) of the university's 'Student Discipline Ordinance-2018', which prohibits teasing, ragging and abusive behaviour anywhere on the campus, including halls and academic departments.
Following the allegations, the university suspended the 12 accused students under Section 4(1)(b) of the ordinance.
