JU VC panel polls Thursday

The election to nominate a three-member Vice-chancellor (VC) panel for the Jahangirnagar University (JU) will be held on February 20 in the campus.
JU acting VC Prof MA Matin disclosed this in a written statement.
He said: "Implementing the directives of university's chancellor and also President Md Abdul Hamid, the election is being arranged."
"It is my duty to arrange, as per the University Act 1973, the VC Panel Election in the Senate as soon as possible," he said. According to the rules, the Senate nominates a panel of 3 persons to the Chancellor for the appointment of VC for a period of 4 years. The last election for the nomination of VC panel was held on July 21 in 2012.
Mentionable, Matin, a professor of statistics department of the university, was appointed acting VC of JU on January 12 after the former VC Prof Anwar Hossain resigned in the face of student and teacher protest.
However, a group of JU teachers under the banner of Muktijuddho O Progotibadi Shikkhak Jote' a joint platform of a faction of pro-Awami League and leftist-leaning teachers urged President Md Abdul Hamid also the chancellor of the university to postpone the VC panel schedule for February 20 terming the existing senate invalid.
