July uprising survivors clash with NIOH staffers

Some July Uprising survivors and their relatives along with other patients were locked in a clash with staff members of the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital (NIOH) on the hospital premises in the capital on Wednesday.
The confrontation, which began around 10:00am, reportedly stemmed from the growing tensions following the suicide attempts by four survivors of the July Uprising.
Witnesses said the patients attempted to poison themselves inside the hospital, triggering altercations and vandalism at the hospital.
The hospital staff members went on a strike early on Wednesday, demanding their full security.
However, July Uprising survivors alleged that hospital staff members attacked them.
Hillol, a survivor of the July Uprising, told the FE, "The hospital staff members attacked us and other public."
Tensions escalated when the hospital staffers allegedly refused treatment to patients, prompting survivors of the July Uprising and their relatives to clash with them.
As the situation worsened, relatives of other patients visiting the outpatient department joined the fray.
Prof Dr Khair Ahmed Choudhury, director of the hospital, described the scene as chaotic. "The situation has turned into a mess."
