Khorshed Alam made CCC administrator

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 04: The government has appointed Khorshed Alam Sujan as the administrator of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), as the tenure of the elected mayor and councillors ends on Wednesday.
Although the five-year tenure of outgoing Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin expired on July 25 last, fresh elections to the post could not be held due to coronavirus pandemic. The last working day for the elected mayor and councillors is August 05.

Sources said the Election Commission (EC) postponed the CCC polls, scheduled for March 29 last, due to the Covid-19 outbreak. No new date for the elections has been declared yet.
Against this backdrop, the LGRD ministry appointed Khorshed Alam Sujan, an Awami League leader, as the CCC administrator on Tuesday. He will take charge on Thursday.
Talking to the FE, Khorshed Alam Sujan said, "I sought nomination for the mayoral post in the CCC elections. However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave me the charge as the CCC administrator for the interim period. I will discharge my duties with utmost honesty."
According to the sources, the last CCC polls were held on April 28 in 2015 and AJM Nasir Uddin was elected the mayor. Monjur Alam Monju, the opposition candidate for the mayoral post, boycotted the polls bringing the allegation of rigging.
Nasir Uddin took the charge as mayor on July 25 in 2015.
Asked for comment on his tenure, Nasir Uddin said, "I have tidied up the city; removed the billboards from city areas. I have worked to make the city clean and green during my tenure."
"No new taxes were imposed this time considering the financial condition of the city-dwellers," he added.
