\\\'Kidnapped\\\' student found dead in Sylhet

A university student, who was allegedly kidnapped by a trader in Bandar Bazar in Sylhet city on Monday night, was found dead in a canal at Manikona village in Fenchuganj Upazila on Friday. The dead is Khaled Ahmed, a student of Sylhet Metropolitan University and son of Mohammad Sulus Mia of Nimadal village of Golapganj upazila. Khaled along with his cousin Jahirul Islam had gone to Karimullah Market in Bandar Bazar for selling a laptop on Monday, police, quoting Jahirul, said. Kabir, a trader, lured them into Chandra village in Ramdha Bazar of Bianibazar offering them a handsome amount of money for the laptop. Later, Kabir confined them to his house and demanded Tk 1.2 million as ransom from the family members of Khaled over mobile phone for their release. After a serious bargaining, Khaled’s family agreed to provide Tk 0.5m and informed the matter to police. Later, the kidnapper released Jahir. Police arrested Mumit Al Mahmud, cousin of Kabir, from Bianibazar Upazila and seized a mobile phone set, used by Kabir to demand the ransom money from Khaled’s family. Meanwhile, locals noticed the body of Khaled at Kurkuri canal in Fenchuganj upazila and informed police, who recovered the body, with the hands and legs tied, and sent it to Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy, according to UNB.
