September 07, 2010 00:00:00

Thousands of Muslims thronged mosques and other religious places Monday night and offered special prayers in observance of the holy Lailatul Qadr, the night when the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (sm), reports BSS.
The devout Muslims joined milad, zikr, Quran Khwani and religious discussion in mosques and their houses in line with the traditional practices as the night is better than 1,000 months.
This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is likely to occur on one of the odd nights on the last ten days of Ramadan and most likely to be the 27th.
On this holy occasion, the Muslims also visited graveyards to seek blessings of the Almighty Allah for eternal peace of the departed souls of their near and dear ones.
Bangladesh observes the 27th Ramadan as a national holiday with newspapers publishing special articles and the state-run Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television as well as private television channels and radios putting on air special programmes offering prayers and highlighting the significance of this holy night.
Although the literal meaning of the word "Qadr" is "measure", the day has been popularly referred to as Night of Power while it is also the anniversary of the night on which the holy Quran is believed by Muslims to have been revealed in its entirety.
On the occasion, President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages greeting the countrymen and the Muslims across the world and seeking blessings of the Almighty for peace and progress of the country.
In his message, the President said the very night of holy Qadr, as superior to thousand months, is very sacred and virtuous for entire mankind.
"Almighty Allah opens His hoard of blessings and forgiveness on this night," he said.
Zillur Rahman wished that Almighty Allah would fulfill everyone's life with His unlimited blessings on this night.
Terming Lailatul Qadr as a significant night of Ramadan, in a separate message, the Prime Minister said the holy Quran was revealed on this night to show mankind the path of worldly and eternal emancipation.
"I pray to Almighty Allah for continued progress, peace and welfare of our beloved motherland and the Muslim Ummah on this night," she said.
On the occasion, the Islamic Foundation took up various programmes.
A waz mahfil titled 'Fazilat and Significance of Lailatul Qadr' was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Zohr prayers Monday.
With Muhaddis of the foundation Mufti Waliur Rahman Khan in the chair, the function was addressed by Khatib of Eskaton Garden Jame Mosque Maulana Abdul Hakim Azadi.
