CHITTAGONG, June 03: Chittagong has a bumper production of lemon during the current season. Rich in Vitamin 'C', it is very popular with the Chittagong people.

It is mainly produced in Hathazari, Chandanaish, Patiya, Boalkhali, Satkania, Banskhali, Lohagara and the hilly region of Chittagong Hill Tracts.

With the flower blooming in the Bangla month of Falgun and Chaitra, the lemon trees bear fruits in Jaishtha, Ashar and Sraban months.

Chittagong is one of the regions in the country where lemons are abundantly produced.

Every year, the lemon is sold through forming squads in the region. Owners of the gardens, lease the gardens to the traders.

Frequently, forest department puts its land to auction for a particular period every Chaitra month. It helps the government realise a huge amount in revenue.

Lemon produced in Chittagong are supplied to the different big markets of the country including Kawran Bazar and Shyam Bazar in Dhaka.

But due to absence of adequate cold storage facilities hundreds of metric tonnes of lemons are being  wasted.
