Thousands of volunteers participated in a clean-up programme in around 40 districts across the country on Saturday.
The young volunteers cleaned filth and dirt at open places, residential areas, roads, educational institutions, parks, rivers, and other public and private establishments, officials said.
"Poriborton Chai," a social organisation, arranged the programme marking the "Let's Clean up the Country Day-2014".
It declared December 31 as the day a few months back but it could not be observed due to strike called for the day by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Youths from different other social and volunteer organisations, educational institutions and locals participated in the clean-up programme in separate groups, making it successful, said chairman of Poriborton Chai Fida Haque.
The volunteers also created awareness among the people and encouraged them to keep their own areas clean throughout the year.
The closing event of the clean-up programme was held at the Osmani Udyan in front of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in the capital.
The concluding event was attended, among others, by Bishwa Shahitya Kendra founder Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Architect Mobasser Hossain, Farah Kabir, Syed Hasan Tipu, Shaon Mahmud, Advocate Mahbubul Alam, Iftekhar Ahmed, Muminul Haque, Nahid Sultana and Syful Islam.
Laying stress on keeping the surroundings clean, Mr Abu Sayeed called upon all concerned to play roles from their respective positions in this connection.
He also administered oath to the volunteers and other people present promising not to throw any dirt especially in open places.
Mr Fida Haque read out a memorandum that was supposed to be submitted to the DSCC administrator later.
Apart from creating awareness among the people, speakers also identified absence of sufficient dustbins beside the roads, feeble enforcement of relevant legal provisions and lack of coordinated waste management at the city corporations as major reasons behind the unclean condition in surrounding areas.
