Lightning strikes kill nine more

Death toll in first week of May hits 36

At least 36 people have been killed, nine of them alone on Monday, by lightning strikes in the first week of May after 70 were killed in March and April, reports bdnews24.com.

Monday's deaths occurred in Sherpur, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj, acoording to officials of local administration or police station or public representatives.

Most of the victims were agricultural workers, harvesting or carrying paddy during storms when they were struck by lightning bolts like previous days. The death tolls on May 1, May 3, May 4 and May 5 were 10, seven, eight, and two respectively.

A 15-year-old grade X female student of Nalitabarhi SESDP Model High School was killed on her way home from private tuition at Nalitabarhi Upazila.

A farmer died while harvesting paddy at Sadar Upazila and another was killed while carrying crops in Nokla Upazila.

A 60-year-old man was killed while taking cattle home during storm at Sribardi.

A 15-year old boy died while working in the field at Sadar Upazila.

A farmer in Srimangal Upazila was killed after being hit by lightning strike. Two other people were also injured in the incident.

A farmer from Niamatpur village in Sullah Upazila died after being struck by a bolt while harvesting in a rice field in Chhayar Haor.

During the rainy weather, some workers went to Brinda Chitta Haor for harvesting paddy crops.

One died on the spot while lightning struck the field. Another was taken to Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition where doctors declared him dead.
