Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in association with the Gulshan Society on Saturday began cleaning the city's Gulshan Lake to restore its pleasant condition.
In addition to the DNCC staffers, communities including voluntary organisations, civil societies and school students took part in the cleaning drive.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam, Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman Fazlur Rahman, State Minister for Information & Broadcasting Mohammad A. Arafat, Gulshan Society leaders, and representatives of different foreign embassies in Dhaka were present at the inaugural ceremony held at the Gulshan Lake Park.
Following a views exchange meeting with the journalists and city dwellers present there, the cleaning programme began around 10 am from a point near the Gulshan Mosque area.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Atiq said the water bodies like Gulshan Lake and Baridhara Lake belong to Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).
The DNCC has written a letter to RAJUK to hand over the management of the lakes to the DNCC, but to no avail they remain under RAJUK, he said.
"The Musallis of Gulshan mosque have repeatedly told me that the stench of contaminated water from the lake reaches the mosque area, making it difficult to breathe," he said, adding that the community leaders of Gulshan and Baridhara Societies approached him in this regard.
Consequently, the DNCC along with the societies concerned took the initiative without further waiting for the RAJUK's move, said the Mayor.
