FE REPORT

Low-lying areas of some northern districts are likely to be inundated in the next 24 hours due to incessant rainfall and onrush of water from upstream, causing concern for Aman farmers.

Sarder Udoy Raihan, duty officer and executive engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), said the Teesta River at Dalia and Kaunia points may flow above respective danger levels in the next 24 hours and create short spell of flooding in nearby low-lying areas.

Citing some meteorological agencies, the FFWC in a statement on Friday said there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the northern, north-eastern and adjoining upstream parts of Bangladesh in the next 48 hours.

For this reason, the Teesta, Dharla, Dudhkumar, Korotoa, Atrai, Kulikh, Tangon and Punarbhaba rivers of the northern region and the Surma, Kushiyara, Someswari, Jadukata, Bhugai-Kangsha and Sarigowan rivers of the north-eastern region may rise at times during the period.

In addition, water levels at 53 river stations, monitored by the FFWC, marked rise while 52 stations recorded fall, as per the statement.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna River is in rising trend, while the Ganges-Padma River is in falling trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours.

Except the Kushiyara and the Someswari, all the major rivers in the country's north-eastern region are in a steady state, it added.

Meanwhile, significant rainfall was recorded at some stations in different districts during the last 24 hours ending at 6:00 pm on Friday.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), in its 24-hour bulletin, said light to moderate rain/thundershower accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.

The highest of 144 mm rainfall was recorded at Sitakunda and 11 mm in Dhaka until 6:00 pm on the day, it added.
