The well-marked low over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a monsoon depression at 12:00 noon Thursday, in close succession to recent weather inclemency, reports UNB.
A Met office bulletin said the well-marked low over west central Bay and adjoining east central Bay moved slightly north-westwards into west central Bay and adjoining area and intensified into a monsoon depression.
The depression was centred about 1,065 kms southwest of Chittagong port, 1,015 kms southwest of Cox's Bazar port and 915 kms south-southwest of Mongla port at that time.
"It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction," said the Met warning.
"Under its influence, steep pressure gradient lies over North Bay and squally weather may affect the ports."
Maximum sustained wind speed within 44kms of the depression centre is about 40 kph, rising to 50 kph in gusts/squalls. "Sea will remain moderate."
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three.
All fishing-boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast until issuing further notice.
