There has been a sharp decline in incidence of acid violence in the country, on the back of a massive campaign by various social organisations and tougher laws aimed at deterrence, reports UNB.
The Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) has been leading the fight against this social disease, common in the Indian subcontinent, since 1999 . According to their figures, some 85 persons were attacked in 69 incidents across the country during the last calendar year - 2013. The number of people suffering attack in 2002 had been nearly 6 times higher.
Women and children predominate in the list of total victims, accounting for nearly three-fourths of the total figure - 1792 women, to go with 845 children.
Legal coordinator of Acid Survivors Foundation Animesh Sarkar said the main factors creating the resentment towards acid violence and bringing it down were the massive campaign and advocacy coordinated amongst various social organisations.
He, however, said most of the acid victims are denied justice as some 90 per cent accused in acid violence cases manage to escape punishment for lack of stern laws.
