The Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) started forming committees at the union parisahd (UP) level from January 2014 aiming to make consumers aware about their rights, official said.

Earlier, the DNCRP has completed committees at upazila level.

"We have formed committees at upazila level. We started forming committees at the union level in January 2014 so that the consumers at the grassroots level could understand about their rights," Director General (DG) of the Directorate of the DNCRP Md Abul Hossain Mian told the FE Thursday last.

He said that the UP chairman will be the head of the committee. Members of the UP and local elite will also be included in the committee.

"We have already formed 200 union committees," he said. There are above 5,500 UPs in the country

"We hope that the rest of the UP committees will be formed within the next three months," Mr Hossain said.

The DNCRP was formed under National Consumers Rights Protection Act 2009.

It started its market monitoring drive since April 6, 2010. So far it has realised over Tk 74.30 million from unscrupulous traders.

Except the weekend, the DNCRP conducts regular drives at different shops and markets across the country to stem unscrupulous traders from making windfall profit by depriving the consumers through food adulteration and weight manipulation
