A man has died while in police custody in Cox's Bazar's Chakaria, prompting locals to surround the police station in protest.
Three policemen have been withdrawn in the wake of the incident, reports bdnews24.com.
On Friday, Chakaria Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam said, "A man named Durjoy Chowdhury died by suicide while in police custody. Three police officers have been withdrawn for negligence of duty."
Those officers withdrawn are ASI Hanif Mia, and constables Mohi Uddin and Ishraq Hossain.
Durjoy, who worked as a computer operator at Chakaria Government Boys' High School, was handed over to the police by his colleagues around 9pm on Thursday.
The school's acting headteacher filed a case against him, accusing him of fraud and embezzlement of Tk 283,000.
In the early hours of Friday, police recovered his body hanging inside the Chakaria station. Police claimed he had taken his own life.
The death sparked protests from locals in the afternoon.
Kofil Uddin Ahmed, president of Chakaria Imam Association, said: "A judicial probe committee must be formed over this incident. How can a man die in a prison cell?
