The government's space research and satellite-borne remote sensing activities are being hampered, as there is no fresh recruitment the organisation concerned for over the last two decades.
The government-run Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO) has been collecting satellite data on agriculture, forestry, fisheries, geology, water resources, land use, weather, environment and some other sectors with the help of its ground stations.
The collected data has been helping the government in planning its economic development activities as well as fighting natural disasters and calamities.
SPARRSO member (application) Ajit Kanti Das said the government has created permanent posts for scientific officers. The recruitment process is going on, and within a month the existing manpower shortage will be solved.
He said since 1995 there is no fresh recruitment. As a result, scientific researches in many divisions are not getting momentum as per requirement.
"We are not facing major troubles. But if there were more scientific officers in the organisation, there could be more data and remote sensing-based information for the government."
