The much-awaited marine fish survey vessel built in Malaysia will arrive in the country in the middle of next month, officials said.
The survey ship was scheduled to reach the country early this month. "The vessel was supposed to reach the Chittagong port early this month, but its construction has not been completed yet. So, it will take one more month to arrive here," Fisheries Additional Secretary Anisur Rahman told the FE.
"The survey will concentrate on the biological cycle of marine fish, their population in the Bay, density, fishing grounds and breeding places. The vessel will carry out a comprehensive survey on marine fish resources in the Bay of Bengal," he said.
A six-member team will leave Dhaka for Malaysia on May 3 or 4. The vessel will take around six days to arrive in Bangladesh from Malaysia. "We are expecting that the vessel will arrive here in the middle of May. And we will start carrying out our survey from November next," Mr Rahman said.
The Tk 680 million (Tk 68 crore) survey vessel is being built with funding from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
A high-level committee has been formed to supervise the marine fish survey. It comprises experts from Chittagong Marine Institute and Department of Fisheries as well as academics from Oceanography Department of Dhaka University.
A nominal marine survey was carried out in the Bay in 1980s, using RV Anusandhani and RV Macchranga, two outdated vessels given by the Soviet Union in early 1970s.
